What to expect
- Aged at least four years
- No added dosage
Brought out in 2008, this cuvée is above all an exercise in the House style. This is about a wine in its most natural state whilst respecting the spirit of the different champagnes produced by Pol Roger.
Seeking to closely guard the authentic expression of the diversity of terroirs, this no added dosage champagne is produced from the perfect balance between the three grape varieties, blended in equal proportions.
The nose displays refined and complex notes of clove flowers and rose aromas developing into hints of bread crumbs, yeast and citrus fruit, which as they mingle, form a lively and fresh body. On the palate, the first attack, straight and fine as an arrow is surprising, compared to the mature and concentrated nose. But this firm texture seems to act as a chisel enhancing a sumptuous wine, well-structured and fine. The aftertaste develops subtle aromas of honey and cloves giving the wine more depth and contributing to its good length.
About the house
If it is good enough for her Majesty the Queen to drink every evening, then this it is good enough for us. Pol Roger is of the few champagne houses that have rightfully earned the British coat of arms to adorn every bottle and after all, it’s not just a favourite with the Royal Family but most of Britain, who know good champagne from the average. This medium-sized, family owned treasure of the Champagne region is the epitome of quality and consistency. With deep cool cellars, this maison leaves their cuvées ageing for far longer than most of their counterparts allowing the development of very fine and tiny bubbles. This creates a silky texture on the palate with subtle toasty notes that are the hallmark of excellent champagne. If ever in doubt, buy Pol Roger.
Food pairing
Freshly shucked oysters. It will perfectly match sweet and firm fleshy food, such as a starter of crayfish, lobster, crab and rock lobster salad drawn out with a dash of olive oil and hazelnut vinegar.
Reviews
This is a Pure of contrasts, juxtaposing the tension and structure of lemon zest and grapefruit with rich and full layers of toast, roast brazil nuts and anise. A shard of taut acidity meets expressive fine, salt-rich chalk minerality, and fine-ground phenolic presence, holding the finish in bone-dry tension, finding harmony thanks to the softening influence of lees age. It’s a finely honed, oyster-ready apéritif.
