Erinn Klein’s parents started Jurlique and when they sold this was the new project. With his wife Janet they make thoughtful, perfumed wines from their Mount Barker base in the Adelaide Hills. They have five hectares of vineyards across three different sites that are, of course, biodynamic.
To me this wine almost smells like a perfume (power of suggestion maybe?). There is violets and lavender, cherries and plums. Milk chocolate and is reminiscent of the spicy/meaty aromas of walking through Queen Vic Markets deli hall. When you sip the wine it offers a range of sweet and savoury characters almost all at once. Ripe dark cherries, damp earth, more floral notes, balsamic like intensity. It is quite silky with the tannins and acid sitting under the fruit. The flavours linger and slowly unwind on your palate. It’s a pretty stunning drink now but will come together further by 2020. Would partner with a mild red curry or duck.
Adelaide Hills – This is a big and varied region that basically stretches from the top of the McLaren Vale all the way to the bottom of the Barossa. This means there is a big scope for climatic conditions. In the central part where its altitude is quite high you can get some of the best sites in the world for Sparkling wine. In the slightly warmer parts of the centre, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme with Riesling, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc worthy of honourable mentions.
Shiraz/Syrah – A bit of a chameleon, Shiraz can change how it looks depending on terroir and/or wine maker influence. The Syrah based wines of Northern Rhone are dry and austere while the Shiraz of Barossa is rich and fleshy. A variety that lends itself to long aging but can be drunk at any time of its evolution.
