Dr. Hermann - Riesling Erdener Herrenberg Auslese GK - 2016

The 2016 Erdener Herrenberg Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule is sourced from the upper part of the Erdener Berg, which is located at 270 meters above sea level and ripens three weeks later than the lower parts of the Treppchen. It was picked at -7 degrees Celsius on the 5th of December, just a few hours after the Eiswein from the Treppchen that was picked at -9 degrees Celsius in the early morning (at 6 a.m.). Christian Hermann finds that the wine is not concentrated enough to be classified as Eiswein although he would have been allowed to do so. However, the wine opens with a concentrated and tropical-scented bouquet of pineapples and slatey aromas. Bottled less sweet than an Eiswein—with nearly 113 grams of residual sugar—this is a concentrated, lush and very elegant Riesling that is extremely stimulating to drink. It is piquant, very precise and salty and reveals a crystalline structure, finesse and lingering salinity. Great finesse and tension here.
