Bill Downie from William Downie is a great winemaker. He was the Young Australian Winemaker of the Year in 2006. He may not be as young as he was then (are any of us?), but he is even more talented than he was then. It is worth noticing that before establishing his own label in 2003, he spent a bit of time in Burgundy working for Domaine Fourrier and Hubert Lignier before coming back in Australia and working for Bass Phillip. Bill is a reference in Australia for minimal intervention, site specific Pinot Noir. If you never tried his wines, do not wait any longer!
Why do we like it?
The Bull Swamp Pinot comes from four separate dry grown vineyards that was planted in 1981 on red volcanic soils situated at 150m of altitude in Gippsland. Be ready to be surprised by the wine delicious vibrant red cherry, strawberry aromas with a touch of elderberry and spice. Lots of complexity and allure, slightly Burgundian, it's simply wonderfully seductive and definitely savoury with great drive and energy. What a beauty!
