Alert! Alert! We have just found an absolute gem!!! It is his first vintage and it’s already remarkable! It’s so Burgundian but it’s from next door in the Jura. Maxime Crotet, originally from Beaune, was steeped in the world of gastronomy and oenology from his early years. His grandfather, Jean Crotet, owned the renowned Hostellerie de Levernois, a Michelin-starred establishment. Maxime's passion for winemaking ignited during his formative years, leading him to apprentice under Natural Wine pioneer Frederic Cossard at Domaine de Chassorney in Saint Romain. Starting as a "cellar rat," he ascended to become Cossard's trusted aide in the winery. After eight years of invaluable experience, Maxime embarked on his own natural wine venture in 2021 in Beaune despite lacking vineyards of his own.
Why do we like it?
Maxime buys his Pinot Noir grapes from organic vineyards in Burgundy. Following his mentor's ethos, Maxime prioritizes natural winemaking techniques, resulting in pure, exuberant wines that reflect their terroir. Looking ahead, he aims to expand his presence in Burgundy by crafting micro-cuvées from organically farmed sites. This is such a lively wine, full of fresh strawberry, cherry and crunchy raspberry. It shows some pretty geranium and red liquorice character too with earth, savoury tones that makes this wine already so complex!
