2021 Joh Jos Prüm 'Wehlener Sonnenuhr' Riesling Spätlese, Mosel

$133.00
Founded by Johann Josef Prüm in 1911, the winery rapidly built a reputation for its racy, pure expressions of Riesling, grown on the extraordinarily steep, slate slopes in the heart of the Mosel. Today, the estate is run by Dr Katharina Prüm who watches over 13.5 hectares of vines on the extremely steep slate slopes of the Mosel. The family’s holdings include many of the Mittelmosel’s most famous sites: Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich amongst a few others. Yields are low, with the harvest often stretching to late November. The winemaking is meticulous, but the extra effort is worth it. The resulting wines are known for their purity of fruit as well as their distinctive mineral character. Why do we like it? All the vineyards of Joh Jos Prüm are renowned, yet Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard that is the most famous. With seven hectares owned, mostly of ungrafted vines, the family makes some of the most outsanding Riesling on planet earth. Wehlener Sonnenuhr has the highest pure stone content of all the Prüm vineyards and is also one of the steepest. Spätlese translates as 'late harvest', so expect some sweetness, but combine with the low alcohol level, the elevated acidity and the sensational persistance of flavours, it is far from being 'just a sweet wine', It is sensational, displaying honey, candied lemon, white flowers, meringue notes and it is simply harmoniously balanced. To try with a variety of food such as oysters, spicy Asian dishes or even a mango tart.    Grape           Riesling Country        Germany                          Region          Mosel                     Vintage         2021
