The Vajra family dates back more than two centuries in the Barolo region. However, the estate as we know it today was established in the late 60’s by Aldo and his wife Milena. Nowadays, the second generation is running the operation with Isidoro, Giuseppe and Francesca Vajra.
The spirit of tradition is very well present, the use of long maceration times and large neutral Slavonion casks for aging are in use. However, the family would not describe their style as traditional, more forward-thinking and happier to evolve depending on the vintage. Aldo was a visionary, he started to revive his family legacy at the young age of 15 years old! He was the first one to acquire organic certification in the region in 1971. The high-elevation vineyards are a unique factor to Vajra wines, allowing them to express fresh wines with great balanced acidity and great complexity.
Why do we like it?
The Langhe is made from young vines from around Barolo, the fermentation will last for an average of 15-20 days followed by 10 to 14 months aging in old barrels. It starts with a lovely transparent garnet colour and will take you into some lovely savory and charming characteristics of cherry and raspberry fruit with a hint of damson. Tannins are present but not overly rich, adding to the juicy elegant of the fruit, combined with the touch of earthy notes.
