Savoie is a beautiful Alpine region situated on the border with both Switzerland and Italy and that’s where you will find the organically farmed vineyards of Domaine Adrien Berlioz. Berlioz took over the family vineyards in 2006, two hectares located near a small village called Chignin at 390m above sea level. With plenty of hard work alongside the pursuit of purity and a certified biodynamic approach to farming, he has grown the vineyard to 5 hectares, transforming it into one of the region’s most prestigious domains.
The hard work starts with the incredibly steep slopes the vines are planted on, some of which boast an inclination of 50%. His vineyards are planted of a mixture of the region’s best known indigenous varieties, all farmed without the use of herbicides or non-organic fertilizers and all by hand (with a little help from the horses).
Why do we like it?
This wine is made from the Jacquere grape which is the most planted in the region, popular with growers because of its productivity but in this instance Berlioz has treated his Jacquere just like any other wines he makes. The results are evident in the incredibly mineral driven, intense and pure wine, sure to leave a lasting impression of just how good Savoie wines can be. Lovely hint of nuttiness, herbs and white flowers with a touch of quinine and verbena. Why not try it with a yellow cheese or a cheese fondue.
