From a short distance outside Madrid is where you will find the exceptional estate of Comando G. A join venture between Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia, two friends since college who found themselves working in the area around the Sierra de Gredos. Those two have redefined the quality level of what can be made in the area by elevating the Grenache grape to new height. Forget the big, jammy, high alcohol wines made in many examples; for them, it is all about finesse and elegance. The vineyards are all farmed biodynamically, and are between 50 to 80 years old. A combination of high altitude, old vines, sandy soils and fairly humid micro-climate help to get a long growing season and moderate alcohol level. Their wines have intense aromatics and intensity, we can't recommend them enough!
Why do we like it?
The Rozas 1er Cru is a blend of plots located in the lieu-dits of Matallanas, Mingogil, Guija and Alisos in the village of Rozas de Puerto Real. It had seen a very long post-fermentation maceration and was aged in a mix of concrete tulip, oak foudres and barrels. It is a captivating wine, subtle and delicate but tremendously expressive! Showing a bit of rose, liquorice, plums, cherries and pepper, it has a Burgundian feel to it! The flavours are infused nicely while the texture is sensual with polished tannins, a real eye-opening wine when it comes to the capacity of Grenache to make fine and elegant wine.
