AA Badenhorst is in Swartland, South Africa where they have some old bush vines grown next to the Paardeberg Mountains. The estate is run by cousins Hein and Adi, whose grandfather was the manager of Groot Constantia for 46 years. Together, these two have restored a neglected cellar on the farm that was last used in the 1930′s to make natural wines in the traditional manner. Adrian has worked in estates like Chateau Angelus, Alain Graillot in the north Rhone.
This Chenin Blanc was planted in the 1950’s and it differs a bit from its counterparts in Loire Valley. The grapes were handpicked with great care and chilled overnight in a cold room. The following day, they are whole bunch pressed to a settling tank.
Why do we like it?
The wine has a lovely crisp baked apple and pear aroma, in a refreshing acidity so typical from the variety. A gentle round mouthfeel from occasional lees stirring during 7 months of maturation before bottling. This wine will be delicious with white fleshed fish dishes.
