2019 Le C de Calon Ségur, St-Estèphe, Bordeaux

$80.00
Chateau Calon Segur is the most northerly of all the Médoc Grand-Crus Classés, it is a classified 3eme Cru Classe. It is the château with a heart on its label (very popular during St-Valentin but that’s not why we love the wines!). That is because the former owner, Marquis de Ségur, though he owned such Estates as Lafite and Latour, he declared "My heart belongs to Calon". Fast forward, the Château is now own by the Gasqueton and has been making impressive wines during the last century. Calon-Ségur’s has 74 hectares of vineyard, located to the north of the village of St-Estèphe. Party enclosed by a wall, the vineyard is planted with the classic Bordeaux grape varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which all lie on up to five metres deep gravel beds, perfect for draining the excess rain. Why do we like it? The C de Calon-Ségur is what we call the third wine of the estate, it is coming from younger vines and offer more of an immediate pleasure of drinkability, so you don’t have to wait another 10 years to open it. It displays the signature of the estate in their wines, an excellent depth of fruit and superb definition of flavours. It is aged for 17 months in high quality French oak before being bottled. It exhibits a freshness and fruitiness that is exquisite. Lot of fresh blackberries, cassis and plum, along with fresh mint, cigar box and vanilla. It has a lovely fragrance which combine well with the oak subtle cedar and toasted notes.
