Now run by the 7th generation of the family, this estate has built a reputation for producing great sweet wines on the back of some outstanding vintages in the 1950's and 60's. It was officially founded as a monastery in 1335 and the Carthusian order cultivated the vineyards for over 400+ years before handing it over to the current family in charge. It is a truly historic property and is currently the eighth oldest wine-growing estate in the world.
Why do we like it?
The Karthäuserhof vineyard represents one the finest vineyard in Germany, it is extremely hilly, up to 55% gradient! These wines are some of the most memorable Riesling we have tried. Don’t be afraid of a bit of residual sugar on this wine, this is the style and along with the low alcohol level, it makes it so easy to drink. The Kabinett shows fresh citrus, apple aromas and orange zest quality. Great aromatics, a touch of sweetness but beautifully balanced by elevated acidity. You won’t forget your first sip and will easily become addicted (in a good way!) to this type of wine.
