This is a fantastic wine produced by a very influential family from the Rhone Valley in France, but made in Paso Robles, California. The family Perrin of Chateau de Beaucastel and Robert Haas from America. While travelling in the USA, Jacques Perrin became friends with Robert Haas and created this beautiful partnership, Tablas Creek Vineyard. This is the closest it gets to a Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the New World of wines.
Why do we like it?
It is extremely well-made with fine with ripe cherry, ripe strawberry aromas, it even has the garrigue, savoury aromatic herbs, so characteristic from the wines of the Southern Rhône. The smooth and silky tannins are elegant, and it certainly has a very long finish of oak spice with subtle notes of clove and nutmeg. It already has a few years in bottle allowing for it to express some tertiary aromas of leather and tobacco. You can even keep a few bottles in your cellar as it will keep evolving into something even more beautiful with even more developed aromas.
