The Dethunes started as growers in the early 1800s and began to make their own Champagne in the 1930s. The winery is located in the Grand Cru of Ambonnay, one of only 17 in the region. With vineyards planted in the ratio of 70% Pinot Noir to 30% Chardonnay, vineyards are farmed on organic principles, the estate also hold the highest level HEV (High Environmental Value) certificate for sustainable viticulture. This immaculate 7 hectares' domaine goes from strength to strength every year. The Champagnes are vinified in a mix of stainless steel cuves, foudres and 205 litre barrels, the oak all being sourced from local forests.
Their wines tend to be deep, rich and full, but with lovely freshness and elegance. They also put the date of disgorging on the back of each bottle, which is never less than three years prior to release, which again underlines their attention to detail.
Why do we like it?
It's without a doubt an incredible Champagne! All the fruits are coming from Grand Cru vineyards, aged and vinified in oak casks. It's pretty complex, dense and rich on the nose with aromas of ripe pears, cocoa butter, pannacotta and a soft chalkiness. There is a big mouthfeel and hint of brioche and nuttiness coming from the years spent on lees. It's serious and absolutely delicious!
